"Little Gypsy"

"When I was very young and the urge to be some place was on me, I was assured by mature people that maturity would cure this itch.

When years described me as mature, the remedy prescribed was middle age.

In middle age I was assured that greater age would calm my fever and now that I am fifty-eight perhaps senility will do the job.

Nothing has worked. . . In other words, I don't improve, in further words, once a bum always a bum. I fear the disease is incurable."

- John Steinbeck

I saw this quote on the blog of a "Wandering woman in Spain" and it reminded me of what my mom has called me for many years ~ "Little Gypsy". As far back as I can remember I've always loved to travel. I've been told that my itch to "get away" will subside as I get older, but it seems that itch is only getting stronger with age.

My parents traveled a lot when I was a child and they took my brother and me on many trips as well. We've been to Disney World several times, the Great Smokey Mountains, and Jamaica. Dad took Ryan and me to Cancun, Mexico for Spring Break one year and when I moved to Hawaii for a semester of school Dad went with me to help me "get set up". He just wanted to go to Hawaii, I know. I'm glad he went. After what happened just a few weeks ago, I'm glad I have those times to look back on.

One of my biggest dreams is to travel the world and see all that God has created. I love adventures and experiencing different cultures. It's fascinating to me how people do things so differently in other parts of the world. My dad loved to travel and visited many different places in the Caribbean and Mexico. He always wanted to take Ryan and me on a trip to Europe. I pray that one day I'll have the opportunity to make my Dad's dreams, and mine, come true.

Swag Bucks!

I found a great way to earn points towards gift cards for tons of stores and other cool items just by searching the web!  It's called SWAG BUCKS and it is super easy.  All you do is download the Swag Bucks toolbar and use it to search whatever you want.  It works like the Google toolbar, but for every 2-5 searches you do you earn a point or more.  They also have surveys and polls you can complete for points and many other ways to earn.  It's really kind of fun to watch your points go up.

It takes a little time to earn enough points to redeem them for anything, but they can add up quickly too.  It depends on what you do to earn them.  Use the widget on my blog to sign up and start earning points today!

EAT PRAY LOVE

So my husband, Todd, and I went to see Eat Pray Love tonight.  Shortly after finding our seats and doing a little people watching while waiting on the previews to start, Todd says, "This is obviously a chick flick!"  I looked around and realized Todd was 1 of 4 men in the whole theater.  Poor guy!  I think he liked the movie though, at least a little bit.

After watching Eat Pray Love I started thinking about how, as Americans, we are so consumed with making money so we can have things that we end up missing out on LIFE.  We work away our lives!  We think that having nice expensive things is going to make us happy, impress others, and maybe somehow increase our self worth in society.  How sad!  We end up missing out on all the things that matter.  In the end, when we look back on our lives we'll wonder, "what do I have to show for all this time I've spent working?"

Seeing this movie, along with losing my dad to a motorcycle accident just 12 days ago, has awakened me to the realization we all know but seem to forget, that life isn't about having stuff.  It's about making the most of the time we have here on Earth.  It's about making a difference in another's life, getting to know people and loving them for who they are whether we agree with them or not, learning from these people and applying what we've learned to better our own situations.  Enjoying God's creation, and if possible, traveling to see His creation and experiencing life in those places.  It's about getting to know God, figuring out His plan for our lives, and carrying out that plan.  This life sounds much more fulfilling than a life filled with just a bunch of "stuff".
